After a disastrous opening match that saw WSEH in the relegation zone, the WSEH National Junior U20 League team produced a much better performance in the 2nd match in their Southern Premier Division series to move themselves back into contention for a place in the finals in September.
It was good to see Chinedu Monye back on the track after a long injury enforced lay off and she returned with a win in the 100m in 12.0 secs. There were also A string victories for Shelayna Oskan in the 400m in 57.5 secs, Vicky Fouhy in the 800m in 2m14.0 and Rose Reynolds in the 100m Hurdles in 14.7 secs. and newcomer 16 year old Martha Reynolds looked a fine prospect with her 2nd place in the 1500m in 4m48.4.
The Harvey sisters Nasya and Nina opened the field competitions with good points from the Hammer event. Nasya set a new pb of 41m06 in taking 3rd in the A with 41m06 and Nina was 2nd in the B string with 33m50. In the other opening field event, the Pole Vault, Sophie Upton was 3rd with 3m05. Lizzie Thompson had a good day setting a new pb of 1m55 in the High Jump and taking 3rd in the A 400m Hurdles in 68.2 secs. There was another 3rd place for Jo Botwright in the Discus with 33m63, leaving Chloe Wright to take 2nd in the B with 22m29. Other B strings to score well were Claire Hing 3rd in the Long Jump, Emma Paton, 3rd in the 400m, Rachel Stedman, 3rd in the 800m, Helen Farmer, 2nd in the Javelin, Steph Brown, 3rd in the High Jump, Melissaa Hack, 3rd in the 300m, Bex Myers, 1st in the 1500m. Steph Brown again played a significant part in the points tally contesting the High Jump, Triple Jump, Steeplechase and 400m Hurdles.
Amongst the Men, it was Jamie East that put himself on the line, contesting 5 events. His best result was 3rd in the 400m Hurdles A with 60.9 secs, but he also won the B 110m Hurdlesa in a new pb of 15.0 secs.and was 2nd in the B High Jump with another pb of 1m85. Josh Patrick was the class act in the 100m, breasting the tape 1st in 10.8 secs, to notch the only WSEH outright victory. Others went close however. Rickie Letch was 2nd in the 800m in 1m56.6, Alex Tovey was 3rd in the 1500m in 4m12.9, Nathan White was 2nd in the 3000m in 8m58.2. In the field, there were pb’s galore. David Harvey set a new best of 6m44 for 3rd in the Long Jump, Andy Winchcombe had a pb of 11m71 in the Triple Jump, Cameron Lake equalled his best of 2m05 for 2nd in the High Jump, and Andy Pike threw 40m59 in the Javelin. Tom Galgut made a welcome return after exams to take 3rd in the Pole Vault with 3m35.
The B string athletes also made an effective contribution. Luke Turton was 2nd in the 800m in 2m00.9, 16 year old Elliott Woolmer won the 1500m in 4m13.9, Rhys Glastonbury was similarly placed in the 3000m in 9m06.7, Cameron Smart set a new pb of 7m16.7 in the Steeplechase, and David Walker 3rd in the Pole Vault with an equal pb of 18m46. Marc Forrest also collected a pb in his 2nd string event, the Javelin, with 31m44.
Best of the relays proved to be the 4x400m where Beth Newton, Vicky Fouhy, Emma Paton and Shelayna Oskan powered to a victory in 4m02.9 and in the Mens where Adam Medcraft, Rikki Letch, Alex Tovey and Marc Forrest combined to take 3rd in 3m29.8
