The National Junior League match at Eton saw the local club narrowly defeated by Blackheath & Bromley AC despite a whole host of personal bests being achieved by WSEH athletes. The loss of three of the club’s top athletes – Dan Pembroke (javelin) and Deji Tobais (sprints) were the others - to the German international, proving crucial in the final score.

The mens match saw a sprint double for WSEH in the 100m, Max Galliers clocking 10.59 secs and newcomer Alex Ojo 11.03 secs, both pb’s.
In the 800m saw more pb’s, 16 year old Connor Vine achieved an English Schools qualifying mark with a dominant front run in the 800m in 1m58.7 secs, with Rhys Glastonbury 2nd in the B race in an even faster time of 1m58.33 secs. Another of WSEH’s current crop of classy 16 year olds, Elliott Woolmer was 2nd in the 1500m in 4m04.33, with Nick Lingley in 3rd in 4m17.9.
More maximum points accrued in the 110m Hurdles – Ben Reynolds(13.82 secs) and Jamie East (14.84 secs) obliging. Both athletes had a busy day contesting other events. Reynolds was 2nd in the High jump with 1m90 enabling Graham Cole to win the B string with 1m75 and Reynolds also went on to take 3rd in the shot (12m38) and 4th in the Discus with East 2nd in the B. The opening track event, the 400m Hurdles, had seen Sam Rogers set a pb in placing 2nd in 57.31secs, whilst Jamie East won the B in 58.16 secs. Michael Puplampu set a new pb in winning the Long Jump, breaking the 7m barrier with 7m00 exactly, with East 3rd in the B with 5m92. Puplampu went on to place 3rd in the Triple Jump in 14m46.
The ladies match also produced a significant number of personal bests. Achieving a club record, League Record and ‘Female Athlete of the Match’ award, Martha Reynolds was streets ahead of her chasers in the 1500m steeplechase with a time of 5m08.87 to go top of the national rankings. There was also a super run from 16 year old Laura Burke in the opening 400m Hurdles, winning in a pb of 61.89 secs, with Aimee Partridge 3rd in 71.11 secs in her first attempt at the long hurdles.
Best of the short sprint performances came from Chanel Taite in the 100m with 3rd in a pb of 12.52 secs. In the longer sprint, Shelayna Oskan proved the outside lane to be no disadvantage wining the 400m in 55.11 secs.
Vicky Fouhy was never headed in the 800m in 2m10.87 with Laura Suggitt 2nd in the B race in 2m27.06 secs. The 3000m produced a 2nd place for Rachel Stedman in 10m18.45 with yet another 16 year old Sarah Spears in 3rd place in the B in 12m29.96.
The 100m Hurdles provided useful points, Catherine Hall – Jones (15.44secs) and newcomer Yvette Dickson – Tetteh (16.24 secs) both placing 2nd.
Best of the field events proved to be the throws. Helen Farmer was 2nd in the ‘A’ Javelin with 32m83, with Jenny Yoxall winning the ‘B’ with 30m15. Jo Botwright was 3rd in the Discus with 34m82 and Laura James 2nd in the B with 32m41.
Top of the relay events was the Ladies 4x400m where Jessica Wilkinson, Martha Reynolds, Laura Burke and Shelayna Oskan combined, with Oskan snatching victory in the last few strides in 3m58.82 secs. There was a fast 42.9 secs from the 4x100m mens squad of Tom Evans, Ben Reynolds, Jamie East and Alex Ojo for a close 3rd.
