Alder Valley Boys League - Sun, 27th April 2008 - Bracknell

With several of their key Under 17 athletes competing in the National Junior U20 League Match at Hendon, it was perhaps not surprising that WSEH found themselves playing second fiddle to a strong Reading AC team in their opening Alder Valley Boys League match at Bracknell on Sunday.

There were some good performances from those Under 17 athletes who were at Bracknell. Stewart Challis was a convincing winner of the 200m in a pb of 24.0 secs.
Amir Khan, returning to WSEH colours after a 2 year break was 2nd in the 400m B race in 54.7 secs. The 800m produced a WSEH double with Elliott Woolmer winning the A race in 2m2.6 secs and Humza Mahmood showed that his absence during the winter has had little effect by winning the B race in a pb of 2m7.0secs. Kyle Hodge was 2nd in the 100m Hurdles in 15.7 secs and Daniel Ditton secured his place in the WSEH National Young Athletes League team with his 3rd place in the 400m Hurdles in 71.5 secs. There was also a win for David Walker in his first Pole Vault competition with a 2m00 clearance. Ethan Welch was on form with a winning double in the Long Jump(5m57) and the Triple Jump(11m68) – both personal bests.

Best of the sprinters in the Under 15 Age group proved to be Hurdles specialist Sam Maguire, 2nd in the 200m in 25.4 secs. He went on to win his specialist event, the 80m Hurdles in a new pb of 11.9secs. Training partner Cameron MacRoberts completed the double with his win in the B race in 13.1 secs. WSEH took maximum points in the 800m via Gari Brown(2m10.7) and Jay Fieldmartin(2m17.2). Stephen Knuckey(4m31.1) and Julian Dry(4m51.7) were also amongst the points in the 1500m. There was another WSEH double victory in the Pole Vault from Russell Waterson(2m10) and Nathanial Ditton(1m70). Waterson went on to take 3rd in the Long Jump with 4m66 allowing Oliver Carroll to win the B with 3m93. The WSEH Throwers were on song, with winning doubles in both the Discus and Shot. Alex Matthew was the mainstay taking the A strings with 30m24/10m67(pb), supported by Dante Wilkinson (28m62) and newcomer Ian Batting (8m26).

As usual at the start of the season, the Under 13 Age Group was something of an unknown quantity. There were some pleasant surprises however. Jack Stacey looked very impressive in winning the 800m A race in 2m33.0. Harry Suggitt was 2nd in the 1500m A race in 5m10.3 with Ed Gumpert 3rd in the B in 5m34.4. There was also a good Javelin throw from Michael Christian with 22m14 for 3rd place.

Of the handful of Under 11’s in attendance, star billing came from William Goddard who won the 200m and the 600m races .There was also a 2nd place for Tristan Waterson in the Shot event.
