The start of the 2008 athletics season began for the girls of Windsor Slough Eton & Hounslow Athletic Club on Sunday. The first of the Alder Valley Girls League matches held at Palmer Park, Reading saw the local side coming runners-up to close rivals Reading.
Many of the girls, this season, have moved into older age groups and so were experiencing new, initially tougher competition. The younger age group saw athletes taking to competitive action for the first time.
U17 Ladies
The most outstanding performance of the day came from Shanice Brown, who, taking on the 300m Hurdles for the first time, produced the third fastest club time with 50.4secs. Another first outing at 300m Hurdles was Rachel Westbrook, who recorded a very worthy 58.4secs. There were many fine performances, with several PB’s being achieved.
U15 Girls
With the familiar athletes of last season moving on to the U17’s, the younger athletes, competing in this age group for the first time, found the going tough. However, many PB’s were set, and serve as a starting point from which to improve on. The only exceptions were Karimah Muhammad and Shalisha Patrick, both in their second year at this age group, achieving two firsts, both scoring 13.3secs each. With an exceptional run, Emma Croft achieved first in the 1500m with 5m30.4secs.
U13 Girls
Steph Clitheroe continued her domination of the 70mH, recording a first in 12.1secs. There were also firsts for Chloe Allen, Becky Croft and Josslyn Stotter with new PB’s being set.
Overall, a fine first match performance.
