Men's Team Report
Windsor Slough Eton & Hounslow Mens Team qualified for the National Final of the BAL Cup, with a narrow 8 points win over arch rivals, Blackheath and Bromley Harriers, in the Semi-Finals held at Eton.
It was the first time for several seasons that WSEH have qualified on merit and not as one of the best losers.
Andrew Matthews, fresh from a successful run at Loughborough earlier in the week, turned out for his Club and earned valuable points with the on form, Steve Johnson setting a personal best in the 200m followed by a superb anchor leg to bring the team home in first place in the Relay.
Julian Golley leapt to an excellent win in the Long Jump while Club veteran, Alan James, was placed third in the hammer. Egryn Jones vaulted to second in the pole vault while debutant, Grant Fuller produced a great throw in the javelin to secure second place. Young Ashley Fry (16) ran a super leg in the relay as stand in for our injured sprinters. Ritchie Morgan continued his return to the track after a long layoff to produce a seasons best in the 400m.
Mens Team Director, Bryan Goodman, was full of praise for his team and is looking forward to a top four place in the Final when a different set of events are contested. He singled out youngsters Ashley Fry and Grant Fuller for the smooth way they adapted to stepping into the Senior Team. Bryan Goodman
Ladies Team Report
Windsor Slough Eton & Hounslow (WSEH) Ladies team sailed into the prestigious BAL Cup Final with an emphatic win in their semi-final match at Eton on Saturday. Their wining score of 106 points left the 83 of 2nd placed Blackheath & Bromley looking like that of a far lesser club.
Current holders of UK Athletics equivalent to the FA Cup Trophy, the team dominated the match from start to finish, winning 10 of the 12 events, placing second in the remaining two and gaining victories in every track race contested.
The key to the team’s success was the dedication and commitment of some of the club’s top athletes who turned out to contest the match.
Performance of the day went to sprinter Helen Pryer, who successfully continues to follow her successful format of mixing club and top flight competition. Pryer’s victory in the 200 in an impressive time of 23.29 seconds bettered the stadium record by around half a second.
Fellow sprinter, Chinedu Monye (U20), continued her return to form with an excellent win in the 100m. Her time of 12.02, brought to within a hairs breadth of the sub 12 second time that she is capable of. With another quality race on offer at the UK Women’s League match on August 2nd, Monye well may achieve this.
Dawn Wilson was on club duty for the first time this season after a busy time at invitation competitions. She did not disappoint, with a clear victory in the 400m in a time of 53.86.
U20, Vicky Fouhy and the experienced Carolyn Dickie, contested the 1500m and 3000m races respectively and produced two more impressive wins.
In the 100m Hurdles, another of the club’s top U20 athletes, Rose Reynolds, showed the rest of the field a clean pair of heels to take a clear victory in a time of 14.55.
On the field, Amy Quelch, another from the pool of talented U20 athletes that WSEH has developed, rose to the challenge of her debut in the BAL Cup team, placing 2nd in the Long Jump, despite a late call up to the team to cover for an injured senior.
Maxine Clarke also placed 2nd in the Pole Vault competition having coped well with the unusual rule of being able to take just 8 vaults in total.
Expected victories for two of the club’s top throwers, Rosie Semenytsh in the Javelin and Bola Ogun in the Hammer, rounded off the individual events.
It was then left to the quartet of Pryer, Monye, Lauren Betts-Bucke and Wilson to complete the day with a straight forward win in the medley relay. Irene Speller
