Windsor Slough Eton & Hounslow Athletic Club struggle to field a full team in the opening match of the Southern League 2008 season.
In the first match of the 2008 Southern League season the men of WSEH that were available all performed well with Steve Kimber smashing his PB in the 5000m by over 10 seconds when he totally destroyed the field to lap everyone. John Bowers’s rare appearance on the team list resulted in a win in the “B” string. Both then showed true club spirit to then compete in the 1500m.
Sprinters Mark Holloway, Fahad Khan and Adam Butler all staked claims to start in the British League match in June while 17 year old Ashley Bryant continued to show his International potential as a multi-eventer. Fifteen year olds, Elliott Woolmer and Connor Vine showed the Club that their transfer from Aldershot to Windsor at the start of the season was a major coup for the Club, with Elliott producing a PB.
In the 400m Hurdles, Danny Hodge smashed the Club over 45 record when knocking over 15 seconds off the record to clock 63.2 secs. In the Long Jump, Andrew Winchcombe continued his run of PB’s with a leap of 5.88m.
Special mention must go to Club stalwart Peter Virgo who seems to improve with age. He competed in three energy sapping events namely the Hammer, Shot and Discus.
It was great to witness the enthusiasm and sparkle that the return of Team Captain David Cole, fresh from injury and illness, brought to the team in the High Jump.
A good start to the season that was only marred by the large number of absentees – A problem that Team Manager, Bryan Goodman, vowed to monitor and rectify.
