WSE & Hounslow Ladies are victorious!
Despite facing last year’s league champions, Herts Phoenix and having to contest the National Junior League (NJAL) on the Sunday of this weekend, Windsor Slough Eton & Hounslow (WSEH) ladies managed to field a team strong enough to outclass the other 3 teams in the first Southern Women’s League match of the season.
The throws squad lead the way, with an almost clean sheet of victories. In the senior section, Joanne John & Bola Ogun won the Hammer, John & Jo Wade, the Discus and Ogun & Wade the Shot. Wade also won the “A” string Javelin with a new best and Jo Debs was 3rd in the “B”.
Inspired, in the girls section, Sarah Taplin achieved personal bests (PBs) in the Shot, Discus & Javelin, in which she broke the 30 metre barrier for the first time. Ellie Norris & Lucie Grover also threw PBs in Shot & Javelin, respectively.
Helen Pryer totally outclassed her opposition in the senior 100 & 200, winning both by large margins, whilst in the “B” races, Vicky Cooney was victorious and Alison MacLeod came a solid 2nd. In the girls, Karimah Mohammad was runner up in a close fought 100m race, whilst Shalisha Patrick showed her new season form with a PB and a win!
Chanel Taite, a second year U17, stunned her opposition in her first senior 100m Hurdles race, with a clear win in an excellent 15.0 seconds, which puts her top of the senior 100H rankings.
Taite’s result kick started more fine Hurdles performances. Caroline Heaney placed 2nd in both the “B” 100H and “A” 400H, Cath Hall-Jones and Sarah Phelps did a one/two in the U17 80m Hurdles in which Hall-Jones achieved a PB and Charlotte Banks & Maddi Mellish both placed 2nd in the girls 75m race with Banks also gaining a best.
The “B” 400m Hurdles saw Harriet Shurley in action at this distance for the first time since a long term illness. A sensibly run and solid race brought her home victorious!
Other notable girl’s performances included PBs for Miriam Mohammadi in the Long Jump, PBs and runners up places for Naomi Barbour & Emma Croft in the 800m and a 200m best for Malaika Kingue.
In the senior section, Shelayna Oskan won the 800m in style, with a kick finish reminiscent of Ovett & Coe, that left her opposition in her wake and Lauren Betts-Bucke showed her excellent 2008 form with a sub 60 second win in the 400m.
The senior jumps brought two second places to MacLeod, victory to Debs in the Triple and a fine 2nd place in the “B” to Pascale Waterson, who is a first year U17.
With solid performances from Jane Sheard & Paula Fudge and her training squad rounded off the senior middle distance and the same from Ella pepper & Maryse Haynes in the girls, there were only the relays left to contest.
Whilst the 4x400 relay team struggled against tough opposition, the girls 4x100 team came a strong second and the senior team of Pryer, Cooney, Waterson (U17) & Taite (U17), were truly victorious in an exceptional sub 50 second time.
