WSE & Hounslow Ladies head Southern Women’s League Table with 1 match to go!
With just one match remaining in the 5 match series, Windsor Slough Eton & Hounslow (WSEH) A.C. Ladies are top of the Southern Women’s League table. They are also the only team in the Premier Division to have won all of their matches so far.
WSEH lead local rivals Reading, by 17.5 points at the top of the league table, with Herts Phoenix just 6 points behind Reading. So with one match to go, there is everything to play for and Team Manager, Irene speller hopes that team commitment will be high for the team’s final match in the series, to be held at Newquay & Par on August 30th.
An extremely hot, airless day and a hard track made it difficult for track athletes to produce top performances. However, some athletes did so, against the odds.
In the sprint races, Ana Gomez ran a PB in the girls 100m race and Emma Croft in the 200m. In the seniors, Zoe Wells ran a 200m best and a delighted Georgia Conner-Wilder produced bests in both the 100m & 200m.
The long sprint saw Caroline Livingstone produce her second sub 60 second 400m in succession, U20, Lou Sams achieve a seasons best in the event and non-scorer, Michelle Warren, run a superb 65.8 in her first race back after a lay-off of several years.
In the 800m races, Rosie Adams lowered her all time best in the girls race, whilst Lucy Roe attained a seasons best in the seniors. It was a similar situation in the 1500m where Jo-Ling Chew (girl) lowered her best by a large margin, proving that she has developed hugely this season and Jane Sheard ran a season’s best in the senior race.
The 3000m saw the years of experience and acclimatisation of ex Commonwealth Champion, Paula Fudge come into play. Her ability to cope with the energy sapping conditions far out-weighed that of her opponents as she ran to a well deserved victory. Team mate, Leigh James followed Fudge’s lead and was rewarded with 1st in the “B” race.
There was a mixed bag of results in the hurdles races, with the better performances coming from Hannah Kirby, who stepped in to cover the 80H race and was duly rewarded with a PB, a season’s best performance by Marika Reed in the 400H and excellent performances by Demi Barrance & U13, Ana Inverary in the 75H.
The throwing squad proved to be the biggest point scorers of the day, dominating the events in both the senior and girls sections, where the pairing of Sarah Taplin & Jenna Grant in the girls, brought double victories in both the Shot & Javelin and personal bests for Taplin in the javelin and Grant in all three throwing disciplines.
The senior throws squad of Bola Ogun, Jo Botwright, Jo Wade & Laura McGawn, did much the same, placing high in the results throughout and with Ogun gaining seasons best in the shot and Wade achieving a personal best in the Discus.
The jumps brought some fine results, with Demi Barrance and Emma Croft gaining a PB and SB respectively in the girls High Jump, whilst McGawn & Georgia Taylor dominated the senior event. The Gomez twins won both strings of the Long Jump, whilst Pascale Waterson gained a PB in the Triple Jump.
The day was crowned with great performances in the relay races, in which the girl’s team placed a close second in their 4x100 and the senior team were victorious in both the 4x100 and 4x400 races.
