In perhaps the most successful weekend ever in the long history of Windsor Slough Eton & Hounslow AC, the local club emerged as UK champions in two separate competitions. On Saturday, at Bedford, the WSEH Ladies successfully defended the British League Jubilee Cup that they won last year and also emerged as top club in the combined Womens and Mens competition. On Sunday it was the turn of the WSEH Young Athletes Team and they did not disappoint with a resounding victory in the National Young Athletes League Final at SportCity Manchester.

The local club’s triumph over the heavily sponsored big city clubs is a tribute to the management skills and quality coaching expertise within the club. The trip to Manchester, with the overnight stay required for over 100 athletes and officials cost the club some £3000 in transport and accommodation costs. Several donations have eased the financial burden, but the club still has had to dig deep into reserves to
make the trip possible. Fund raising during the winter is now the prerogative to replenish the much depleted coffers.
Of the match itself WSEH went into an early lead and gradually pulled away from the chasing clubs, to win by what may well be a record margin. Two confirmed records were established by WSEH athletes during the day. Sam Maguire , who seems to improve with every outing, sped to a new meeting record in the U15 Boys 80mHurdles in 11.1 secs and Ruth Bourne dominated the U13 Girls 1200m to set a new meeting mark of 3m52.7. Maguire also went on to grab a bronze in the 100m B race in 12.06 secs.
The true quality of the WSEH athletes is clearly demonstrated by the medal count – 37 golds, 39 silvers and 38 bronzes. Several athletes returned home with double golds.
