Windsor Slough Eton & Hounslow Athletic Club Senior Mens team on the verge of promotion
The reward for the long 6 hour journey to Gateshead was a result that means barring a last place finish in the last match at Derby in three weeks time that WSEH are promoted back to the Premiership of the British Athletics League for the 2010 season. In poor weather conditions the team performed extremely well to pip the home club by one point for the second spot.
Pride of place went to our superb High Jump pair of Sam Bailey (2.09m) and Ben Reynolds (1.93m) who although both under 20 brilliantly won the A & B string. Equally the match finished with our 4 x 400m Relay quartet of Nigel Levine (47.8), Rory Graham-Watson (49.3), Rikki Ketch (49.3) and Stephen Johnson (47.8) destroying the opposition to secure a victory for the team.
Still recovering from his 10th place in the European Under 20 Decathlon, 18 year old Ashley Bryant produced a vault of 4.03m to finish 2nd in the B string to support the steady Egryn Jones who finished 2nd in the A string (4.63m). Another decathlete, Matt George, showed his value to the team by competing in the Shot, Discus and Javelin. Young Rikki Letch (16) defied his age to take on the field in the 800m B race only getting caught on the line. British League debutant, Michael Puplampu, produced a sound leap to finish 3rd in the Triple Jump to soften the blow to the team losing Julian Golley to injury during the warm up.
Mark Holloway continued his return to form, following injury, to record a seasons best (7.07m) to finish 2nd in the Long Jump.
Andrew Matthews, showed his true team spirit in running both the 100m and 200m together with the sprint relay following injury to European Under 23 bronze medallist, Rion Pierre.
Men’s Team Director, Bryan Goodman, commented that it was a very close match with the lead changing hands several time throughout the day, but team spirit and the desire to win promotion won through to reward a very young and talented side to stand just one match away from promotion.
