WSEH moved into new territory on Sunday when they won the opening match in the National Junior (U20) League Southern Premier match at Hendon on Sunday. Their previous best had been a 3rd place in a late season match last year.

The local club also supplied the Male and Female ‘Athletes of the Match’. The male award fell to Lawrence Clarke for his outstanding victory in the 110m Hurdles in a new pb, League and Club Record of 13.76 secs plus the added bonus of dipping under the qualifying mark for the European Junior Championships later this year, The female award went to National Schools Champion Shelayna Oskan who set a seasons best in winning the 400m in 55.73secs.
The WSEH male team saw some good sprint performances. New signing Alex Ojo was 3rd in the 10-0m b in 11.05 secs. Stewart Challis got under the 50 secs mark to place 2nd in the 400m in 49.9secs.
The middle distance winner was Nick Lingley in the 800m in 1m56.46 – a pb.
There was an outstanding run from 15 year old Keegan Lymn in the 3000m. He belied his small stature to take 4th place, knocking some 12 secs off his previous best, with Rhys Glastonbury taking 2nd in the B with 9m18.3.
WSEH had started well in the opening track event, the 400m Hurdles, with Ashley Fry taking 2nd in the A race in 56.42secs, and Sam Rogers made a winning debut with a pb of 57.32 in the b string.
The short hurdles also provided the local club with maximum points when Jamie East won the B string in a pb of 14.66secs. Multi eventer East made a significant contribution elsewhere with 2nd place in the B Long Jump with 6m09 and a 3rd in the Discus with 33m12 plus running a good leg in the 4x100m relay.. The club’s other multi eventer Ashley Bryant was just as busy. He was 2nd in the A Long jump with 6m57, won the Javelin with 61m12 and was 4th in the Discus with 39m72 plus running the fastest leg in the 4x400m relay. Maximum points were accrued in the Javelin with Grant Fuller winning the B with 47m84. There were also pb’s in the opening field event, the Hammer for young 16 year olds Mark White and Teo Kubeina, the latter winning the B string.
There is a new balance to the team this year with the female athletes proving a good match for their male counterparts.
The opening Pole Vault saw pb’s for both Lily-Mae Fisher and Jade Tallent, both clearing 2m90 to prove high points earners.
Jessica Wilkinson partnered Shelayna Oskan in the 400m, setting a new best for 3rd in the B race in 62.34 secs.
Vicky Fouhy continues to impress in the 800m, winning in style in 2m12.01 – a seasons best, then repeating the feat in the 1500m in 4m42.87 secs, with Rachel Stedman 2nd in 4m56.6 secs. As with the men, the WSEH hurdlers were on song. Faye Williams was 2nd in the A race in 15.02 secs and Catherine Hall-Jones set a new best in winning the B race in 15.57secs.
Shelayna Oskan crowned a successful day by taking 3rd in the 200m in 25.06 secs.
Both of the WSEH 1500m Steeplechasers notched new bests, Martha Reynolds won the A string in 5m10.2 and Susanna Ditton was 3rd in the b string with 6m25.1
The throwing events proved the best of the other field events. Jenny Yoxall (31m47) and Sarah Taplin(27m10) both second 2nd places in the Javelin whilst Laura James continues to improve with 2nd in the A Discus with 34m27, with Helen Majek winning the B string with 26m33.

Best of the relays proved to be the male 4x100m where Adam Medcraft, Alex Ojo, Jamie East and Tom Evans clocked a very respectable 43.53 secs for 2nd place whilst the ladies dominated the 4x400 event, Shelayna Oskan, Jessica Wilkinson, Lizzie Thompson, and Vicky Fouhy rounding their day off with a win in 3m58.0 secs.
