The ladies from Windsor Slough Eton & Hounslow (WSEH) A.C. made a slow start to their 2009 Southern Women’s League venture, placing 4th and last, in the first of a 5 match series. But last season’s League Champions were not phased.
The Ladies Team Management group decided to use this match to give under seventeen and under twenty athletes a chance for competition prior to important decision making for 3 National Young Athletes League matches in May. Thus they had a very young senior section to their team doing battle against the other clubs more mature athletes.
It was a close fought match with host club Reading, pulling away towards the end of the day. They had a clear win, with the other three teams almost equally sharing the remaining points. The team placing belies some excellent performances from this young senior team.
The first of these came in the 300m Hurdles, won by under seventeen (U17) Laura Burke in a club record time of 44.0 seconds. Burke was partnered by Aimee Partridge, who despite being a non-scoring athlete, placed amongst the other team’s scorers.
Rachel Stedman (U20) sliced more than 4 seconds off her 1500m best as she gained victory over the senior competitors in her race.
There were double victories for Sophie Upton (U20) & Lily-Mae Fisher (U17) in the senior Pole Vault and Jo Botwright & Laura James, both U20 in the senior Discus.
The senior Javelin saw new signing, Anita White blast the opposition away with a 42.46 metre throw, as she lead her U17 partner, Sarah Taplin to a creditable 2nd place in the “B” event.
Further excellent performances from young seniors came with Bex Myers & Lois Bond, both U17, placing 2nd in the 800m and Georgia Lamothe & Hannah Kirby in the sprints, whilst Nasya Harvey (U20) and Letisha Richardson (U17) placed high in the senior Shot.
With most of the jumpers still affected by long and hard winter training, U17s, Pascale Waterson & Claire Hing (U17), did well against their senior counterparts in the Triple Jump.

Results from the girls section of the team were fairly solid, although the sprints brought mixed results. Whilst Olivia Ceasar and Steph Clitheroe performed well.
In the girls throws, Gabriela Zivanovic and her partners, Miriam Mohammadi & Imogen Eddings placed really well, as did Joanne Fallon, Laura Higton & Ellie Wallis in middle distance races.
In the sprint Hurdles, Cat Hall-Jones (U20) & Charlotte Banks (U17) did exceptionally well in their respective races, whilst U15s, Ana Inverary & Sophie Tudge showed untapped talent in the girls races. Inverary & Tudge could excel in this event if they applied themselves to technical training that is available.
The day ended on the usual high provided by the relays, starting with, Paris-Matic, Georgie Haynes, Ceasar & Clitheroe placing 2nd in the girls 4x100 relay. The senior squads excelled, with Hall-Jones, Chanel Taite, Sarah Phelps & Lamothe, all under 20 years old, gaining a substantial win in the 4x100 relay with a sub 50 second time and Heaney, a senior, with U17s, Myers, Sophie Purkis & Burke stunning their 4x400 opposition, finishing over 40 metres in the lead!
