Southern Women's League - Sat, 30th May 2009 - TVAC, Eton

What a difference a month makes! Windsor Slough Eton & Hounslow (WSEH) A.C. ladies were run away winners of the second of a series of five Southern Women’s League matches. The points they amassed have seen them rise to 3rd in the League table and a tantalising 7.5 points from the league champion’s slot that they are defending.
This was a great result from a team that was still not at full strength, due to the Bedford International Games and a National Young Athletes match the following day.
In a match filled with fine performances, it was difficult to pick out just a few for mention, but there were some personal stories that warrant attention.
Senior athlete, Caroline Livingstone, is off to Iraq this Thursday with the RAF. Her deployment was originally scheduled for October and after a good winters training, Livingstone was looking forward to her best season yet. But the change of plans means that she may miss most of the season. In her final match before flying out, Livingstone showed just what good form she is in, by winning the “A” string 100m, smashing her personal best in the 400m and anchoring the 4x400 relay team. The team wish her good luck in Iraq!
Morgan Lake, still an under 13 athlete, contested three of the girls events, was victorious in two and runner up in the other. With a winning 5.13m long jump that will feature near the top of the U15 rankings, Lake continues to impress and is definitely one to watch.
Cressida Millar (U15) was in action in the sprints. Despite having managed little winter training, Millar impressed with her gutsy runs which brought her individual victory in the 100m and runners up slot in the 200m. Her determination on the anchor leg of the 4x100 relay also brought a justified victory.
Some of the clubs top senior throwers were in action, despite competing at the Bedford International Games the following day. These truly committed athletes are a great example to the up and coming youngsters and between them, Joanne John, Bola Ogun, Janet Smith & Abigail Jones gained 5 wins and one 2nd place form the 6 events they contested.
Martha Reynolds, one of the UK’s top U20 middle distance athletes helped her team whilst carrying out a tough training session. She met her objective of contesting the 800m, 1500m and a leg of the successful 4x400 relay squad and amassed almost maximum points for her efforts. Another superb example of team commitment!
Veteran athlete, Kim Rothman returned to athletics this year after a few years off. Her aim to contest the heptathlon in the World Masters Championships looked to be on target as she claimed first place in the Long Jump, High Jump & Javelin.
In a match of such great overall strength, further great results included a double victory in the girls High Jump, by Demi Barrance & Sophie Jenkins. More doubles came from the partnership of Georgie Haynes with Lake in the Long Jump, Eleanor Duck with Lake in the 75m Hurdles, Shelayna Oskan & Zoe Wells in the senior 200m, Reynolds & Carolyn Dickie in the 1500m and Jane Sheard & Marina Stedman in the 3000m.
Additional individual wins were claimed by Charlotte Banks in the 80m Hurdles, Caroline Heaney in the 400m Hurdles, Miriam Mohammadi in the girls Discus, Alice Simmonds in the Javelin, Lily Guerin in the Pole Vault and Ellie Wallis in the 800m.
Last but not least, this team featured WSEH’s “Pride of the Pensioners”, 73 year old Pole Vaulter, Dorothy McLennan. A vaulter for some years and a World champion & record holder as she progressed through the age groups, McLennan stunned her youthful opposition by placing 2nd in the “B” string Vault.
