With two ‘warm weather’ coaching groups from the local club stranded in Tenerife and Portugal as a result of plane cancellations, there were several gaps in the WSEH team that contested the opening match off the National Junior (U20) League Premier Division at Hendon on Sunday. Despite this handicap, the team produced a series of good performances to achieve a commendable third place in the match.

The numerous personal bests on the day were overshadowed by a new club record in the Discus, deleting from the record books a mark that had stood for 22 years. Steve Watson exceeded the previous mark by a massive 6 metres with his throw of 52m86. Ashley Bryant ensured maximum points with his 42m26(pb) to win the B string. Bryant went on to also win the Shot event with 12m98 and placed 3rd in the Javelin with 50m96.
On the track there were further quality performances. The 200m saw new signing Alex Ojo take 2nd in 22.14 secs(pb) with Tom Evans 3rd in the B string in 22.77 secs. Both WSEH runners in the 400m dipped under the 50 sec barrier in the 400m for the first time, Stuart Challis for second in the A race in 49.24 secs and Rikkie Lwetch with 49.94 secs in winning the B.
There were good runs in the 800m, with a 2nd place for Connor Vine in 2m0.28 and Stefan Richards winning the B string in 2m0.18. James Bennington, an Under 17, was anther B winner in the 1500m in 4m22.1. More of WSEH’s talented Under 17 athletes toed the line in the 3000m, Alex Goodall and Ricky Harvie both placing 2nd in pb’s of 9m10.75 and 9m 24.55 respectively. The personal best trend continued in the 2000m steeplechase where Khalid Al – Abraidy was 2nd in the A string with 6m19.22 and Nathan Ditton won the B in 6m20.79.
Best of the jumps came from Jonny Sawyers who was 2nd in the Long Jump with 6m36 and Charlie Smith similarly placed in the Pole Vault with a new pb of 4m25.
Points were harder to find amongst the Ladies despite numerous personal bests. The sprints provided a fair share with from the Georgia Lamiothe/Chloe Mays combination. Mothe was 3rd in the A 100m in 12,20 secs with Mays 2nd in the B with 13.02 secs. They improved in the 200m with 2nd places in both strings. Lamothe clocking 25.69secs and Mays 25.83secs. there was also a good 3rd place from Sophie Purkis in the 400m in a pb of 61,96 secs.
Hannah Johnson made her league debut with a 2nd in the Javelin with with a pb of 39m20, with Helen Farmer similarly placed in the B with 30m33.
Best of the 100m Hurdles came via Faye Williams with 2nd in the A with 15.65 secs with Natalie Beale 3rd in 16.05 secs,
The best of the relay events saw the WSEH 4x400m squad of Stefan Richards, Jordan Thomas, Paul Cave and Stuart Challis place 2nd in 3m27.38 secs. and the Ladies team of Chloe Mays, Sophie Purkis, Emma Croft, lois Bond placed 3rd in 4m08.0
