WSE & HOUNSLOW LADIES START SOUTHERN LEAGUE SEASON WITH A BANG!

The ladies of Windsor Slough Eton & Hounslow (WSEH) A.C. travelled to Ipswich on Saturday for the first of five matches in the Southern Women’s League. Despite missing athletes unable to get back from warm weather training camps in Europe, the club’s close knit League Champion team performed extremely well to clinch a substantial victory. Their score of 179.5 points was a massive 40.5 clear of 2nd placed Stevenage puts the team third in the initial league rankings, headed only by Reading & Guildford, who both had home advantage.
The majority of the girls section of the team was filled by the club’s Wycombe based satellite training squad, coached by Alan Hewson. Their team spirit & commitment is second to none.
Gabi Zivanivic contested all three throwing events, placed 2nd in two of them, was victorious in Discus and threw a season’s best (SB) in the javelin. Her partners also achieved great results, with Alejandra Gomez throwing a season’s best in the Shot and Nkolika Ataunya & Steph Clitheroe gaining personal bests (PBs) in the discus & Javelin respectively.
Olivia Caesar, Zoe Toudup and Clitheroe took two victories and two runners up slots in the sprints, with Clitheroe running an SB in the 100m. It was a similar result in the Middle distance races, with Sophie Street & Emily Haberfield taking a double victory in the 800m and Rebecca Riches & Ellie Wallis placing first and second in the 1500m.
There was another double victory in the 75m Hurdles, with Clitheroe taking the “A” race and Emma Roberts the “B” in a new PB. Roberts went on to equal her SB in the High Jump, in which a delighted Haberfield gaining an SB.
That just left the Long Jump, in which Walters & Mikaela Wright produced really strong performances, and the relay, in which the well practised squad of Toudup, Caeser, Walters & Clitheroe ran a classy race in an impressive 51.9 seconds.
The under 17 Hurdles races deserve a special mention. Having just moved up to this age group, Demi Barrance excelled in her 80m Hurdles race, placing a strong second in a SB time of 13.1 seconds.
Her partner in the sprint Hurdles, Ella Tucker, who has just returned to training after a long lay off and having practised over hurdles just a few times, ran a PB in both the 80m & 300m Hurdles. Her time of 51.5 in the 300 Hurdles race, places her commendable second in the club rankings.
Not to be outdone, the senior section of the team produced some equally great performances, dtarting with startling double victories in all the races from the 100m sprint to 800m inclusive!
Georgia Lamothe & Michelle won their 100m sprints, in which Warren gained an SB, Lamothe & Harriet Shurley took the 200m, Sophie Purkis & Warren took the 400m in PB & SB times respectively and Bex Myers & Lois Bond the 800m,with Myers attaining an SB.
In the senior Hurdles events, Shurley produced a PB to take the “A” string 100m Hurdles race, whilst Carol Heaney placed 2nd in “B”. Heaney, took her own well earned victory in the in her key event of 400m Hurdles, in which a gutsy Sarah Phelps placed a 2nd in huge PB.
U17’s, Alice Wills, Verity Kyley and Emily Wilkinson produced in the 1500m & 3000m races, with Wilkinson attaining a 3K SB. Her partner Pippa Callingham in the 3K, placed 3rd.
Long term Masters Athlete, Dorothy McLennan, was delighted when she achieved 1.90m in the Pole Vault, a height she has not managed I over two years.
Two of the club’s top throwers, Bola Ogun & Rachel Wallader were in action and it showed with great victories in their key events. First year U20 athletes, Kathryn Wallace & Letisha Richardson achieved well deserved seasons bests, having stepped in at the last moment to cover injured athletes.
Purkis added a Triple Jump best to her 400m one, whilst her partner, Maria Gomez gained an SB in this and the Long Jump, in which her twin sister Ana also jumped an SB.
The day was rounded off in usual style with the girls 4x100 relay taking second place in an exciting and close run 4x100 relay and the seniors taking impressive clear wins in both the 4x100 & 4x400.
