WSEH AC had an excellent result from the re-arranged Surrey AA Championships at Lloyd Park in Croydon today, with 2 individual medals, 2 winning teams and a second placed team.
WSEHs sole athlete in the Senior Women's event, Sophie Morris, was victorious by nearly a minute after a show of excellent front running.
Ruth Bourne won a superb silver medal in the Under 15 girls event, just missing out on gold by a mere 3 seconds. She also won a silver team medal. With all the girls in the team, Emma Maurer (9th), Abbie Schmid (13th) & Alice Wills (14th), running close to top form, they just missed out on victory by 3 points. There were also decent runs from Jo Fallon (21st), Sophie Sutherland (31st) & Laura Higton (36th) in a 39 strong field.
There was team gold in the Under 13 Boys event. The team of Gus Cockle (5th), James Cumins (6th), George Gathercole (10th) & George Bourne (12th) won by an excellent 19 points. The strength in depth at this age group was shown by the fact the club had 9 finishers in a field of 66. The other runners were Tom Coe (15th), Giles Robinson (25th), Jack Major (47th), Niall Anderson (49th), Sammy King (51st) & Joe Brown (53rd).
The other team gold came in the Under 17 Mens race. In a team which was missing a number of their usual scorers there were excellent runs from Nathan Ditton (4th), Jonny Dry (14th), Gari Brown (20th), Dan Coe (22nd) & Nick Cockle (26th).
The Under 13 Girls were 5th in a high quality team competition. All ran well with Eloise Milbourne 14th, Emily Reeves 15th, Kathryn Ditton 16th, Lauren Miller 42nd & Alice Turner 43rd in a 56 runner field.
The unluckiest team of the day were the Under 15 boys. Firstly, only 4 of the expected 6 runners turned up, giving no margin for error in the 4 to score event. When their leading runner, Callum Todd, collapsed at halfway round the 4km course the other 3 boys were left to soldier on knowing a team medal had gone. All 3 had excellent runs, with Ben Bradley 4th, James Watson 10th & Charlie Critchley 12th in a 42 strong field.
Other runners were Hannah Barefield, who was 6th in the Under 20 Women and Emily Wilkinson, who was 16th in the Under 17 Women.
It was an excellent turnout for the club with 34 runners competing the week before the National Championships.
