On Saturday, the Ladies from Windsor Slough Eton & Hounslow (WSEH) Athletic Club placed an extremely close second to host club Guildford in the second of their Southern Women’s League matches. Three of the four teams involved are the strongest in the premier division, so it was a very closely fought match, with Guidford winning on 152.5, WSEH on 150 and Horsham, 149.
The result means that WSEH keeps its position in the league’s power five clubs and with only one more of the five meet in the remaining fixtures, the team looks set to maintain that status. It is a great achievement for the ladies for whom Southern League fixtures all clash with premier division matches in National Leagues.
It would have been a victory for the team, but unfortunately two athletes did not finish their races due to injury problems and the pole vaulter had one of those rare problems of no heighting.
The senior section of the team was a combination of youth and experience, with long serving seniors, Bola Ogun & Janet Smith kicking off the day with a double victory in the Hammer, in which Smith gained a season’s best (SB).
Senior multi-event athlete, Laura McGawn, achieved season’s bests in three of the four individual events she contested and anchored the 4x400 relay team to victory.
Jess McCabe and Aleasha Kiddle, two recent signings to the club in the under twenties age group, showed the team spirit on which the success of the club was built and were rewarded with good results.
McCabe won the 400m Hurdles in a personal best (PB) time of 64.7, whilst Aleasha Kiddle won her 100m race and gained a PB in the 400m.
Shakira Whight & Letisha Richardson were victorious in the Triple Jump and achieved an SB and PB, respectively, as was Harriet Shurley in the 100m Hurdles and Emily Barrett in the 400m Hurdles, where she gained an SB.
Other senior team achievements included a close 2nd place for Chinedu Monye in the 100m, top places in the 800m for Molly Riglin and Caroline Heaney, an SB for LeighJames in the 1500 and a double win and PBs for both Maddi Garner & Clare Danson in the 3000m race.
The under 17s in the team did exceptionally well, with Rosie Adams achieving PBs in both the 80m Hurdles and 400m races and Demi Brrance a PB in the 300m Hurdles.
The girls section of the team maintained the momentum with some excellent achievements. These included PBs for Fay Carmichael & Amber Godwin in the Long Jump, Caitlin Critchley & Amy Talbot in the 800, Nyassha Horne-Thompson & Megan Szpur in the 75m Hurdles and SBs for Godwin and Rachel Platt in the High Jump and Fay Carmichael in the Javelin.
Carmichael & Ellie Jackson won both strings of the Javelin, whilst Sarah Chapman and Tilly Compton-Stewart made it a one/two in the 1500m, in which C-Stewart ran a PB.
Strong relays rounded up a very fruitful and successful day.
