Some 200 athletes from far away as Sheffield, Cornwall and Kent converged upon the Thames Valley Athletics Centre on Sunday to test their winter training and to gain qualifying marks for the forthcoming area and national indoor championships.
There was good representation from WSEH athletes with many of them figuring in the leading places.

A Happy New Year to all our distance runners and may the successes achieved in 2009 continue throughout 2010 – particularly in the major races ahead.
The Road/Cross Country season so far has been possibly the best ever for WSEH with successes across the board throughout the age groups.
WSEH AC’s Hayley Yelling caused the biggest surprise at the European Cross Country Championships in Dublin on Saturday by unexpectedly winning the Senior Ladies Race and leading the GB team to gold medals in the team event. Hayley, who retired from the sport a year ago, getting married in the meantime, has only been back in training for 4 weeks on a limited training base of 40 miles per week. She missed the sport and cut short her retirement with the intention of ‘fun running’ but with sights set on making the Commonwealth Games England team at 10,000m in India next summer.
WSEH’s two GB representatives in the World School Games in Doha, Qatar both acquitted themselves well reaching the finals in their events. Laura Burke was 6th in the final of the 400m hurdles and Rikki Letch was similarly placed in the final of the 1000m.
Last Saturday (12th Dec) Reading hosted the Berkshire Cross Country Championships at Prospect Park on a cold day.
In the U13 Girls race, Gemma Burgin was the best placed with an excellent run to place 7th closely followed by the ever improving Felicity Johnson 8th and Tilly Compton-Stewart running well to finish 11th.
George Popplewell won the Boys U13 title with Max Bennett placing 9th.
Ellie Wallis was the sole runner for the club in the U15 Girls race taking 11th place.

Under 20 athlete Ravi Talla proved to be the the fastest of them all winning the top race in a new pb of 7.16 secs ahead of more senior counterparts. Jumps specialist Jonathon Sawyers was the 3rd fastest of the U20’s with his 7.28 clocking
